Illinois ranks as the 5th most populated state and 25 largest.  It’s economy is representative of the entire US in that it has industrial cities as well as large swathes of agricultural areas and is home to various natural resources such as timber, petroleum, and coal.  Chicago, it’s largest city by far, is a major hub for finance, retail, technology, education, and boasts one the country’s busiest airports (O’hare International Airport).

Illinois was founded when settlers began migrating to it’s southern areas from Kentucky in the early 1800’s.  It wasn’t until 1818 that Illinois officially became a state and roughly 12 years later Chicago was born.  In the early 1900’s, Chicago became a major hub for industrial jobs and resulted in the Great Migration of migrants moving to Chicago in search of jobs from southern rural areas.
