Managing the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

Posted by Matt Buchanan

If you live on the Atlantic seaboard and have returned only to find your home or condo flooded from Hurricane Sandy, it’s important that you act quickly.  The longer flood water stands in your property, the greater the damage the larger the bill to repair that damage.

Unfortunately, most homeowners insurance policies do not cover floods caused by hurricanes or other external reasons.  If you live on the coast, it may be the case you’ve purchased additional flood insurance, but given how far inland Sandy has traveled, most homes 100’s of miles inland won’t have such protection.

If you’re in that situation, sadly you’re on your own.  Chances are your insurance company is inundated with claims, and waiting for them to do anything at all is only going to cost you more heartache and money.  So act quickly and diligently to save your home and your personal possessions.

If there are items that have not been soaked yet, make sure to quickly get them to a dry area where they can remain dry.  If the flood water has receded and you are able to extract water from your property safely, remove as much water as possible.  We highly recommend you wear protective gear on your body and hands to ensure you’re not exposed to any harmful bacteria that might be present in the water.

Given the extreme nature of Hurricane Sandy, the reality is that you are going to need to contact a professional water extraction company.  Many will already be overwhelmed with business, and in many cases will sub-out work to other water extraction companies.  These sub-contractors travel across the country chasing storms.  While that can seem shady, many are reputable companies that perform work to industry standards.  The important thing for you to ask as a customer is a) who will be performing the work (the actual company you’re speaking with or a sub-contractor) and b) are the people that are performing the work licensed, insured and fully certified to perform the water extraction or water damage restoration services required.
