How do sewer back-ups happen?

As you’re aware, buildings are incredible feats of engineering with hundreds of moving parts that all function together to give us the comfortable lifestyle we enjoy.  But sadly, sometimes those things we just take for granted stop working.  And with sewer lines, it’s no different.  Here’s some reasons your sewer line backed-up:

Tree root intrusion – sometimes, especially with older sewer lines that are made of clay, tree roots will penetrate the sewer pipe itself and cause damage and backed up the system.

Sewer pipe collapse – if your sewer line is extremely old, it may simply decide to give out and will actually collapse, causing raw sewage to either back-up from the yard or if it’s under the home’s foundation or in the crawl space, it can just seep into the home from the foundation.

Heavy rain overflow – one other common event that can happen is that the city’s main sewer lines become overwhelmed with rushing rain water from a heavy storm and are unable to continue to drain sewage from all of the lines feeding into it.  Should this happen, the rain water will push sewage back-up your sewer line and overflow the toilets and drains leading out of the house.

Normal blockage – sometimes we flush things down the toilet that were never meant to go down.  Other times, we have partial blockage and enough paper towels and gunk clog up that blockage and result in a back-up.

Regardless of the reason for the back-up, if it’s happened to you a fast response is critical!

Responding quickly saves your possessions.  Sewage is a biological hazard and given its toxic nature, in many cases whatever items have been damaged by it need to be tossed out.  However, if we’re able to begin the cleaning and disinfecting process quickly, many possessions that have been soaked by sewer water can be saved.

Responding quickly saves you money.  As is the case with any type of flood event, the faster the response time, the less damage, the more likely things can be salvaged, etc.  So moving quickly will lessen the amount of work we need to do to clean, dry, and disinfect your home and will thus make the cost less!

How does the process work?

We give you a free estimate

First, we walk through the sewage damaged area to assess the extent of the loss.  We then create a mitigation protocol that essentially outlines what needs to be done and assigns a cost.  Our costs are driven by insurance provided software so you know the cost is reasonable and should the loss be covered under your policy, there won’t be issues with during the claim process.

We can begin work immediately

If you want to move forward, our crews come prepared to begin the process of mitigating your sewer damage loss immediately.  We remove items to be taken offsite for cleaning, perform the sewage extraction process, remove/repair any drywall or subflooring, begin drying and dehumidifying the space and then complete the process by disinfecting & deodorizing the area.

We can assist with the insurance process

If it’s the case your loss is covered under insurance, either through your standard homeowners policy or a sewage back-up rider, we can assist you during the claims process.  We work directly with carriers daily and can even bill them directly so that you don’t have to get tangled up in a time consuming, paperwork heavy process of filing the claim.
