Spring is Flood Season for Tampa Homes

Posted by Matt Buchanan

While most places in the US see more rain during the spring, in Tampa there’s the back-to-back threat of spring flooding and the summer/fall hurricane season. It’s why it is even more crucial for Tampa residents and business owners to prepare for whatever nature may throw at them this year.

At RestorationEze, our busiest time of the year as a water damage cleanup company is the spring. When April showers come, some homes simply aren’t prepared for the rain and suffer the consequences. So here are some things you can do if you live in the Tampa Bay area and you don’t want to have to call us to provide emergency water extraction services:

Even one damaged or misplaced shingle can cause water damage in your attic if enough rain hits your roof. Especially if your roof is older, it’s important to have a certified roofer inspect it each year to make sure there aren’t any damaged areas that could eventually cause flooding in your attic space. Having your roof checked is especially important after any wind storms as shingles can be blown off the roof structure or falling branches can damage sections of the roof.

Keep water away from your home’s foundation

Luckily we have very few basements in Tampa, but even so water resting against your foundation can flood your home. What happens? Your concrete foundation is porous and water can seep into it and travel through it. So if water sits next to your foundation, it will eventually travel through that foundation and soak the inside of your house, including your floors and your walls. That is why it’s crucial you have a good rain gutter system that moves the water away from your house as well as making sure your lawn slopes away from it.

These simple steps can go along way in helping your home stay dry during the rainy season. While these steps address rain water, the reality is much of our area sits in a flood zone which means the potential for rising sea or river water is high. If you live in a floodplain, the city of Tampa has some valuable information regarding flood prevention, what to do in an emergency, etc.
