What does a category 3 loss mean to me?

Sometimes when you restoration professionals in your home they’ll toss around a lot of terms that might seem like a foreign language.  But for your situation, the key term is category 3.  It’s the highest level of water damage loss and it essentially means that the loss puts anyone that comes into contact with the substance in harms way.  Sewage is known to contain over 120 pathogens that can make you very, very sick.  In fact, some of the things that can be contracted can be fatal.

It’s because of this that you need to leave the property immediately and that our crews must don complete haz-mat suits and respirators before entering the affected area.

Many people simply don’t understand the dangers of raw sewage sitting exposed in a property. While it’s obviously a stinky mess, it’s a potentially life threatening situation. Please watch the video below to understand what you’re up against when dealing with sewage.

What should I expect during the sewage damage restoration process?

We know you have a lot of questions at this point, and one of those is trying to understand what’s ahead of you.  Every sewer back-up cleaning job is unique, but here’s a general idea of what you should expect:

Area containment.  First we need to cordon off the area that has been affected so that we can restrict the disbursement of harmful pathogens.  This allows us to seal the area and stop airborne diseases from spreading.

raw-sewage-spillSewage Extraction.  The next immediate concern is getting the sewage out of your home.  We use a host of different equipment, depending on what type of surface the sewage is sitting on, to extract it and then remove it from your property.

Pull out carpet, pad, and cut drywall.  Unlike other types of water losses, there is no ability for us to spare your carpets and other porous items, including drywall.  We’ll need to remove the carpet, pad, and cut the drywall at least 18 inches above the flood line.

Apply anti-microbials & sanitizers.  Once the sewage has been removed and any sewage damaged areas that can be salvaged are gone, we then apply sprays that sanitize & disinfect any remaining pathogens and prevent any future mold growth.

Dry-out affected areas.  We then need to utilize dehumidification systems and air movers to remove any remaining moisture and ensure it exits outside of your property without causing any secondary damage to your property.

Replace drywall, carpet, etc.  Assuming the sewage back-up ended up on carpet or crawled up your walls and we had to remove those areas, we’ll then come back and replace those items so they look like new!

Sometimes a little prevention goes a long ways!

We hate it when we arrive a major loss that simply didn’t have to happen. Sure, we welcome the business, but the reality is that it can be a tumultuous event for the people involved and we hate to see it happen. But luckily, you can do 2 important things to lessen your chances of ever having to deal with a sewer backup.

Maintain your pipes!

fats-oils-grease-clogging-restaurant-sewer-lineWhen pipes clog, the water can’t escape and backs up into your home. And one of the most common reasons for clogged pipes is homeowners pouring oils, fats and grease down their drain.  What happens is the liquid hits the cold pipes either in your home or in the ground and solidifies and creates a blockage that will eventually cause waster water to come back up into your home.

Install a backflow prevention system!

The best single thing you can do to protect your home or office against a raw sewage backup is to install a simple device that prevents water from coming back into your property. It’s commonly called a sewer backflow prevention device and it’s your last point of protection should water begin coming back up your main sewer pipe for whatever reason. Here is a great video showing how they work!
